Mark Derby Artist statement I enjoy looking at and get inspiration from what I call “ Things with some history. “ Many of the decoration and patterns for my tile and pottery come from the things I have collected over the past 25 years. Things with history have character, personality, and remind us of our own life stories. They create in us a sense of Home and Place, and are important markers in our lives. The New Orleans pieces seen here mark my time in South Louisiana as an observer at first, and now as a 15 year resident. My business, Derby Pottery and Tile has been successfully operating for the past 10 years. Crowns, Alligators, and Fleur de Lis images among others, have a long and storied history in New Orleans, and are now part of my happy and evolving life story in New Orleans, Louisiana.
